Don't Sweat Pinning for Pinterest Over The Holidays

The holidays are just around the corner and many of us will be taking time off over the festive season. However, working in social media makes it hard to be completely off. With the help of a few social media scheduling tools and a little bit of planning, it’s feasible to have at least a few hours to put your feet up and sip mulled wine with the rest of your family.

Pinterest Boards

Planning ahead is key if you want that uninterrupted break. Make sure you have appropriate and timely boards with relevant content that reflects how your fan base takes in the season.  87% of Pinterest users make purchases because of the social media platform so make sure your URL links are up to date. Pinners use Pinterest to build dream boards for vacations, wardrobes, weddings, holidays, new houses and much, much more. It’s up to you to create images and boards they want to follow and pin back to their own boards, thus sharing with their own followers in the process. Images with a white or blank background and close-ups are great for products you want to stand out, but be sure to also use in-context and lifestyle images to show off your brand vision. This allows the consumer to get a feel for your product and to help them decide how to use it. As Pinterest is used for both inspiration and planning, you will optimize your reach by having a good mix of both.

Ol’ Crimson is Coming Home

After 15 years and 216 appearances on ESPN’s College Gameday, Ol’ Crimson is Coming Home. This, most likely, does not mean anything to most of you. However, as a lifetime Washington State Cougar fan and Alumni, this is a day to celebrate.

Typically, on our blog we discuss the newest trends and best practices in Social Media, Video Production, Graphic Design, etc. However, since I’ve got the reins this week, I’m going rogue. Mostly because I haven’t been able to think about anything else since ESPN announced last week that it was bringing College Gameday to Pullman, WA. Let me give you some history of why this is such a big deal and bring you all up to speed.

Washington State University (WSU) is located in Pullman, WA. A small farming town with 33,000 full time residents and less than 20,000 students, 75 miles south of Spokane, WA, which is the only city within a four-hour drive that you might have actually heard of. WSU’s football team has seen success over the years, but is widely considered as a PAC 12 Conference underdog. Competing against schools like USC, Stanford, Oregon, and Washington, who have major cities and money to back their recruiting efforts. Being the underdog has never hampered the unwavering passion of the Cougar fan base though, which has been visible every Saturday during the college football season over the last 15 years.

In October 2003, Cougar alum Tom Pounds (class of ’81), drove from Albuquerque to Austin for the Kansas State vs. Texas game with a home-made WSU flag to wave in the background on the set of College Gameday. What he didn’t know is that this would start one of the best traditions in college football. Since then, Ol’Crimson, the crimson red flag with white logo, has made it to the next 215 Gamedays and traveled to 72 cities, in 34 states, which included 70 different college campuses. For the majority of this streak (2005 – 2014), WSU was 36-85 and owned the worst winning percentage among all Power 5 programs. However, the streak continued thanks to the die hard Cougar fans across the country who volunteered to wave the flag each Saturday.

As the tradition gained steam over the years, people began to take notice. Including the crew of ESPN College Gameday, who regularly talk about Ol’ Crimson on their program. However, the Gameday buses never made their way to Pullman. That is until now! Nearly 15 years to the day since the tradition started, WSU will host College Gameday and Ol’ Crimson will get to come home.

Technology in Schools: Making Kids (and Parents) Lives Easier

It’s that time of the year again. A fun summer with lazy days and adventures has come to an end and the kids are back at school. For those of you with children, you know that this time of year usually means a crazy amount of shopping for school clothes, school supplies, new shoes, backpacks and for those with kids in an after-school sport or band there is the added expenses of an instrument, a choir outfit or sports gear. It’s the time of the year I dread. Not because of all the shopping, (confession: I find that fun), and not because the kids go back to school, because let’s face it: Two and a half months of 24/7 non-stop parenting…er…bonding is enough to drive any sane person crazy. No, what I absolutely hate the most are the mountains of paper that are brought home that first week of school. I spend tedious hours of filling out page after page and reading piles of paper filled with important information about this, that and the other.

However, after nine years of being a part of this show, I am happy to say that it has become much easier. Not because I am now a pro at the game, but because of social media and other very helpful apps. This year, for instance I did most of my back to school clothes shopping online. Well-placed retargeting ads from brands like Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister, and Nike popped up with deals not to be missed while I was on Facebook connecting with my Facebook friends. Going onto their sites and selecting clothing items by a click of a finger made shopping for my kiddos a breeze.
