Graphic Design Books I Always Have by My Side for Inspiration

In the world of graphic design, branding and logo creation we are constantly tasked with coming up with new and creative ideas. Concepts need to be fresh, innovative and representative of the clients we are working with. Getting started and thinking of new ideas can be a daunting task though. Yes, you can search the web, Instagram, Pinterest or Dribble for ideas however that can be a vast rabbit hole and time suck. I’ve come to rely on these books when I have a bit of a creative block and need a shot of inspiration. 

  1. Made by James: Your Honest Guide to Creativity and Logo Design

This book takes a dive into James Martin’s creative process, including everything from dealing with clients to developing your own style. He has a unique and creative approach to logo design that helps to get your thoughts flowing and think of outside of the box solutions.

  1. Logo Modernism

Sometimes keeping things simple is more impactful. This book exemplifies that idea as it showcases some of the best examples in minimalist logo design from 1940 - 1980. Amazingly these minimalist designs withstand the test of time and are as impactful today as they were when they were created. Sometimes this is exactly what I need to see when I’m overthinking a project or design.

  1. Draplin Design Co. Pretty Much Everything

Covering everything from logos to posters, record covers and merch, this book showcases the work of Aaron Draplin. His unique use of bold lines and bright colors has made him famous in the design community. As you look through this book he includes examples of not only bold one color marks of his dog Gary, but also off the wall snowboard graphics. No matter the client or project, you can draw inspiration from this great collection of work.
